Holocaust Memorial

Posted on: 26/01/2026

As part of a UK-wide Holocaust Memorial Day event, a selection of Year 9 students joined thousands of others across the country to hear the testimony of Holocaust survivor Paul Sved BEM. Listening to a first-hand account was a powerful and unforgettable experience, helping us to understand why it is so important to remember the Holocaust and learn from history.

Hearing a personal story, rather than just learning facts, helped us to better understand the real human impact of the Holocaust and the struggles people faced. Paul’s account of his experiences growing up in Hungary during this time made history feel real and personal. We were particularly moved by hearing about his mother and the brave actions she took to protect him, which showed incredible strength, love and courage in extremely difficult circumstances.

Being able to ask questions and hear clear, thoughtful answers helped to deepen our understanding and made the experience feel very real. Hearing Paul’s testimony helped to bridge generations, allowing us to learn directly from someone who lived through the Holocaust. Overall, this experience had a lasting impact on us and reminded us why remembering the Holocaust is so important, as well as not taking our own safety and freedoms for granted.
