Instagram is a photo and video sharing App most popular amongst teenagers and young adults. Anyone over 13 years of age can create an Instagram account by registering a valid email address and selecting a personalised username. Instagram users can interact with each other by liking, commenting, sharing, and sending each other private Direct Messages (DM).
Staying Safe on Instagram
When setting up an Instagram account for the first time, users can choose between having a public account or a private account. We would suggest you ensure your child sets their account as being Private so that strangers cannot access their photos or videos without their consent. If an account is private, the user must accept a follow request from other users, whereas a public account will allow anyone to follow them.
For help on privacy settings please see the Instagram website.
We would also advise visiting the Safer Internet website, which has guides and useful information regarding safety on a range of Social Media Apps.
