JOB DESCRIPTION

ADMINISTRATION

Job Title: Exam Invigilator

Job Location: As directed by Exams Office

Responsible to: Exams Assistant – Line Manager

Hours of work: Casual


This is a casual post, with staff working as required by the school during examination periods especially during May/June. A full commitment to the post is required at all times

• To work in a set exam environment
• Monitoring the students taking internal/external exams
• To advise Exam Officer of any suspicious circumstances during the exam – report required
• May be required to start/finish exam
• Calm students if necessary
• Escort to toilet as necessary
• Collect papers at end of exam
• Collect candidate numbers
• Check desk for graffiti & ensure cleaned by student if found
• Ensure chairs are replaced under the desks & exam room left tidy
• Ensure students enter & leave exam in orderly fashion
• Make sure that all candidate signs are in place before the exam starts
• To be vigilant at all times – ie walking around the exam room

The duties of the post may be varied from time to time, in a manner that is compatible with the post held, at the discretion of the Headteacher

What makes a Good Invigilator?

There are a number of qualities that are desirable in an invigilator. These include:

• Accuracy and attention to detail
• A flexible approach to work
• Ability to communicate with candidates and members of staff clearly and accurately
• Ability to work to predetermined instructions
• Ability to work as part of a team or alone as necessary
• Reliability and punctuality
• Ability to keep calm under pressure or during unexpected circumstances
• Common sense and initiative
• Ability to judge when a decision is not theirs to make
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to be firm but fair at all times


Why it is important to have dedicated Invigilators

• Can help establish consistent practice within and across exams if they are used frequently
• Can normally be present throughout whole exam
• Can often work hours tailored to meet the exam timetable rather than the general school timetable
• Can supervise candidates held incommunicado before or after oral assessments or while waiting to sit rescheduled exams
• Can be used to invigilate internal exams and tests,
• Can undertake tasks such as checking registers against scripts.
