David Backhouse, Chair of the Governing Body of Mayfield School:
“I am delighted that work has now started on building what will essentially be a well-deserved new school at Mayfield, with features to match the best of any other in the borough. But the school is not just for the students and staff, we hope it will be used by the whole community, whether it is by use of the sporting facilities or classrooms for IT and other adult lessons.
With a range of new sporting facilities, e.g. Sports Hall, All Weather Pitch, Multi Use Games Areas with a banked spectator viewing area for the running track and cricket pitch, together with new science laboratories, as well as more classrooms, next year will bring the start of a new era for Mayfield.
The demolition next summer of both the existing Sports and Gym Halls will create an open area which will soon become the heart of the school with many possibilities for the future.
The new Reception Suite will transform the front entrance, making it easier for students and visitors to find their way around.
I welcome the local authority’s plans to make Mayfield Road safer, not only for students but for the whole of the local community.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local authority officers who have been involved in bringing this project to life, the contractors Bouygues (UK) for their professionalism and commitment, not least in providing learning opportunities for students during the construction phases of the project.
In years to come, these works will benefit thousands of students and the local community. We have much to look forward to.”
Andy Rehling, Headteacher of Mayfield School
“The whole school is very excited by the prospect of new facilities and the opportunities being brought to our community”.
